Nepal Compiles List of 597 Foreign Nationals Missing After Floods (Names Included)

KATHMANDU, Nepal — A total of 597 foreign nationals from 34 countries remain unaccounted for following the devastating floods and landslides that struck Nepal on Aug. 26, according to the Department of Immigration of Nepal.
India has the largest number of nationals listed as missing, with 191, followed by the United States with 66, Malaysia with 55, Ukraine with 54, and Australia and Latvia with 33 each.
Canada has 30 nationals listed as missing, followed by China with 29. The list includes 32 nationals from the United Kingdom; nine each from Russia and Singapore; eight from Germany; six from South Africa; five each from Japan and New Zealand; and four from France.
Three nationals each are listed as missing from Belgium and Kazakhstan. Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Spain each have two nationals listed as missing.
One national each is listed as missing from Belarus, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Israel, Lithuania, the Philippines, Sweden, Switzerland and Vietnam.
The Department of Immigration said the 597 foreign nationals were reported missing through 39 entries involving travel agencies, trekking companies, embassies, rental companies and individual informants. Individual names, email addresses and telephone numbers were omitted from the records to protect privacy.
The largest reported groups were associated with The Trekkers’ Society, with 77 people listed as missing; Samrat Tours and Travels Pvt. Ltd., with 71; Richa Treks, with 68; Tashi Delek Treks and Expedition, with 58; Fly Everest Holidays Pvt. Ltd., with 49; Leaf Holidays, with 42; Himalayan Glacier, with 38; Kailash Journey, with 26; and Fishtail, with 20.

Last Known Contacts
The Department of Immigration records include accounts of the last known communications involving guides, staff members, travelers and other contacts. The accounts have not been independently verified, and they do not establish that the missing people are dead.
Samrat Tours and Travels reported that 110 people — 92 Indian tourists, 13 staff members and five drivers — had traveled toward Rasuwa. A 32-member group from Kolkata, accompanied by a guide, reportedly completed departure procedures at Nepal immigration but was not recorded as having entered China. A separate 60-member group from Chennai, accompanied by a guide and traveling in three buses, was staying in Syafrubesi. The company reported that 21 members of that group had been confirmed safe and sent to India in coordination with the Indian Embassy. One staff member reportedly survived after jumping to safety and later notified the company, while two drivers were also reported safe, bringing the total confirmed safe from that group to 24.
Other reports placed several groups at or near immigration facilities shortly before communications were lost. Leaf Holidays reported that its last contact came at about 8:30 a.m., when a relative told the company’s contact person that the group had reached immigration. No further contact was reported. A volunteer affiliated with the Isha Foundation reportedly told The Trekkers’ Society at about 9:05 a.m. that the group was at immigration.

A guide working with Kailash Journey reportedly told the company at about 7:30 a.m. that the group was traveling from Timure toward the China border. Himalayan Glacier said it last spoke with a guide at about 8 p.m. on Aug. 25. The guide reported that 36 people were staying at Kailash Hotel in Ghattekhola and 11 others were at Hotel Royal Himalayan in Syafrubesi. The company said it tried to re-establish contact at about 9 a.m. on Aug. 26 to arrange for the guide’s passport to be sent by helicopter but could not reach the guide.
A member of a Fishtail group reportedly contacted family at about 8:30 a.m. and said the team had reached the area between Ghattekhola and Timure. A guide with Dream Tibet Travel & Tours reportedly contacted the company at about 8:15 a.m. and said the group had entered China and that telephone calls might not connect afterward.
A guide working with Richa Treks reportedly said at about 7:20 a.m. that the group was at Friendship Bridge after staying at Hotel Ankila the previous night. Explore Vacation reported that a guide said at about 8:14 a.m. that the team had received immigration stamps at Ghattekhola and was proceeding toward the border. The company said a Chinese guide had been notified through WeChat that the group was approaching. A later communication with the Chinese guide indicated that the group was not allowed to proceed because flooding had occurred in Kerung on the Chinese side.
Alpine Eco Treks reported that a guide said at about 8 a.m. that 16 foreign nationals had reached the Chinese side while the remaining Nepali members of the team were waiting in line at Friendship Bridge. Kathmandu Holiday Tours and Travels reported speaking with a staff member at about 7:32 a.m. who said the person was at immigration in Ghattekhola.
Mundhum Travels reported that it last contacted a guide in Timure at about 8:07 a.m. That group consisted of six Nepali nationals and no foreign citizens.
A porter associated with Tashi Delek Treks and Expedition reportedly said at about 8:40 a.m. that the group had arrived at immigration. The group was traveling from Tibet toward Nepal. Mighty Himalayan reported receiving information at about 8:40 a.m. that its Nepali guide and group had reached the border area.
Fly Everest Holidays reported that an Indian team leader said at about 8:40 a.m. that the group was inside the immigration building. A contact associated with a group led by Sher Bahadur Tamang reportedly said at about 8 a.m. that about 60 people were toward the back of the line at Friendship Bridge. A voice message sent from the border also indicated that the group was there. The last reported communication, at about 8:38 a.m., said only, “OK.”

The Department of Immigration records indicate that several groups were near immigration facilities, Friendship Bridge, Timure, Ghattekhola, Syafrubesi or the Nepal-China border in the hours before communication was lost.
The figure of 597 represents foreign nationals who remain unaccounted for in the Department of Immigration’s records. It does not mean they have been confirmed dead. Some could be stranded, separated from family members or unable to communicate.
The Aug. 26 disaster caused widespread flooding, landslides and destruction in several parts of Nepal, with some of the worst damage reported in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. The disaster also affected the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli and Narayani river corridors and severely disrupted roads and border routes.
The disaster had a major impact on areas used by foreign travelers, including routes toward Rasuwagadhi and the Nepal-China border. Search-and-rescue teams have been working to locate missing people, recover bodies and identify victims.

Editor’s Note: Passport numbers, mobile phone numbers and dates of birth have been removed from the list to protect personal data and privacy. Readers or authorized parties seeking to verify passport numbers or dates of birth may contact the Department of Immigration of Nepal for verification. The figures in this list reflect the number of foreign nationals reported to the Department of Immigration of Nepal as unaccounted for and may not represent the total number reported missing by individual countries. For example, U.S. authorities have reported 70 U.S. citizens as unaccounted for, compared with 66 U.S. nationals listed in the Department of Immigration’s records. The overall number could also be higher because some foreign nationals may have crossed into China or could be missing on the Chinese side of the Nepal-China border, where information remains limited.
